As the security company's employees were escorted out of the room, Di Stefano approached Marino, a dubious look in his eyes.

"Are you sure you don't want me to simply dispose of them?"

"Why? They didn't do anything wrong."

"They lost six million dollars."

"Six million was stolen from them in a robbery that could have been far worse. Oh, and it was perpetrated by armor suits built for killing alien monsters. They were outgunned. There’s no reason to blame them for that. Besides, we already know who it was who did it."

"We do?"

He handed the other man the note that had been left in the incompetent guard's hand. It was printed, which provided no sign of who might have composed it, but the content left no question in his mind.

This is my consulting fee for taking out the trash who tried to kill me, the note read. Try one more time and I’ll simply kill you instead.

Di Stefano looked up from the note, folded it carefully, and tucked it into his pocket.

"McFadden?"

"Who the fuck else? We've tried to get to him for months now. It was only a matter of time until he retaliated, I guess and again, that could have gone much worse. As messages sent go, it was fairly subtle."

"Subtle? It's all over the fucking news. #mechheist is still trending on social media and people are talking about how this might be a viral marketing campaign for one of those VR games that will come out next year."

"As long as they keep thinking that, I’m not concerned. No one knows the stolen money was ours and it'll all be covered by insurance. Even the security company will work to keep any details of what happened from coming out. We come away with a very flashy message but no real damage done. This was McFadden telling us he knows who has been gunning for him and he wants us to stop."

"Is that what you think?"

"Well, yeah. We already know he's literally the only one in the state who has access to those kinds of weapons, which means the cops also know about it. He's too smart to be caught with the mechs themselves or the money when the officers of the law come to bust his door down. Thanks to his connections in the FBI, he'll be on top of any investigation into his operations and he'll come away cleaner than…well, the presidential suite at the Bellagio."

"Do you really think this is the best time to make jokes?" Di Stefano asked once they had walked out of the conference room and reached the elevators.

"Honestly, no, but there's not much else we can do. We've operated with a relative amount of leeway from the folks in Sicily since they do trust us to take care of business around here, but things have changed. Our quarry knows who we are and has the means to target us now and cause economic damage greater than what he has already. If we want to continue our vendetta against them, we'll need the say-so from Don Castellano.
